Labiaplasty (Labia Majora)

A procedure aimed at rejuvenating the larger outer labia of the vagina, which can sag and droop after a large weight loss, pregnancy, or simple aging. Sagging of the labia majora can usually be addressed with fat transfer. Fat can be obtained through VASER ultrasound liposuction from multiple areas of the body.

Labiaplasty (Labia Minora).

Fat Transfer to Labia Majora

Aesthetics in Private

Every woman knows what looks good and what doesn’t and we all feel better if we like how we look. Younger patients may be dealing with inner vaginal labia that may have been on the larger side since puberty or may have changed after pregnancy in a way they find unattractive. For older patients or those who may have given birth multiple times, thinner, stretched-out inner labia may make women feel older than they are.

Aesthetics in Public

Sometimes the shape or size of vaginal labia and/or mons pubis can be seen through clothing. This can be very embarrassing and may be a particular problem for younger women who want to participate in sports involving tight clothing, such as gymnastics or swimming. For some women and girls, unintended “camel toe” can be another concern. The growing popularity of leggings for sports and casual wear is also a factor in the increased demand for labiaplasty.

Discomfort

Having labial hypertrophy, the medical term for enlarged labia, can be physically uncomfortable for some women. Friction can be a particular source of annoying pain and can take a great deal of the enjoyment out of athletic activities such as bicycling and horseback riding not to mention sexual intercourse. Even friction against underwear can be a cause of discomfort. Reducing the size of the labia can be an effective treatment.

As with all surgeries, patients should avoid blood thinning drugs such as NSAIDs (Advil, ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, etc.) two weeks prior to surgery. Similarly, patients who smoke need to stop or cut back on smoking for two weeks before the procedure, though ideally, they should quit smoking permanently.

Though anesthesia could be general, twilight, or local, patients will never be okay to drive following surgery. It will therefore be necessary to have a designated person take them back home or to their hotel. Someone should also be with them the night following the procedure.

Before leaving the facility, patients will be given detailed instructions on how to care for the surgical site to ensure a healthy recovery. They will also be provided with prescriptions for prophylactic antibiotics and pain medication.

Recovery time will vary based on the procedure(s) done but it is often substantially shorter than for other plastic surgeries. During recovery, patients may experience swelling and discomfort which can be reduced through the use of ice packs as well as prescription pain relievers. In general, patients who undergo labiaplasty and vaginal cosmetic surgery should plan to rest at home for a couple of days but should be able to return to an office job two to three days later.
