Am I a candidate for Neck Lift surgery?
The best Neck Lift patient is in good health, a non-smoker, and can avoid blood thinning medications for two weeks before surgery.
Dr. Varkony will tailor the Neck Lift appropriate for you. The neck lift is customized to your degree of facial aging, underlying anatomy, and most importantly your personal goals.
What is the platysma?
The platysma is a thin layer or sheet of muscle in the neck. The muscle sags with age and contributes to the appearance of “bands” in the central neck area. Platysma is continuous with the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), a layer of fat and muscle tissue just under the surface of the face. Modifications of the SMAS is the main component of most neck lift surgeries, not just the skin. Long-lasting neck lift results are obtained by lifting and tightening the SMAS through a variety of techniques.
Where does the surgery take place?
Procedures are done in our fully certified outpatient surgical center, along with board-certified anesthesiologists, and certified registered nurses.
What is recovery like after Neck Lift surgery?
The immediate recovery from your neck lift varies and normally takes anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks. During this initial recovery period, you will experience some temporary swelling and bruising. Most patients describe tightening or a pressure sensation with mild discomfort, which is easily managed with pain medication. Patients wear a gentle, elastic neck wrap to minimize swelling for a week after surgery.
How long is the procedure?
Neck lifts usually take about 1-2 hours, but longer if additional procedures are added to the surgery.
Will I need time off work after Neck Lift surgery?
Most patients plan approximately 1 to 2 weeks off from work. A longer period of recovery may be necessary for combined procedures.
How long will a Neck Lift last?
Your neck will always look younger and more refreshed after surgery, but it will continue to age. After a neck lift, some patients may want a revision surgery, usually 10 to 12 or more years later.
Where are the incisions placed for a Neck Lift?
Neck lifts typically require an incision behind the ears and, in some cases, just below the chin to remove excess skin and treat vertical bands in the front of the neck.
Can I have other procedures done at the same time as a Neck Lift?
You can, and often patients decide to have their eyes, brows, and/or face improved at the same time. Doing multiple procedures on the same day does not lengthen the recovery time, and it allows the patient to accomplish many goals with one surgery.
Do I need to see my own doctor before a Neck Lift?
All patients require basic lab tests, medical clearance and history &physical from their primary care physician. If the patient is over the age of 45 we require an EKG along with the standard testing.
What do I need to do the day before surgery?
The day before a neck lift, you should eat normally but avoid excessively heavy meals, or foods that can lead to acid reflux. Prepare your affairs so that you completely relax and rest after surgery. Most importantly, do not eat or drink anything after midnight before your procedure.
Where does the surgery take place?
Procedures are done in our fully certified out- patient surgical center, along with board-certified anesthesiologists, and certified registered nurses.
What kind of anesthetic will be used?
For almost all cases, general anesthesia will be used, which means you will be completely asleep and pain-free during the entire case. Some other patients, having shorter procedures, can have lighter sedation. However, everyone will be completely comfortable during the procedure.
How much pain will I have after surgery?
Neck lifts do not generate excessive pain during recovery. You will mainly experience a sensation of tightness in your skin, which comes from swelling. Discomfort is well controlled with medications, which we will prescribe.
How much does a Neck Lift cost?
Your Neck Lift procedure is priced based on the specifics of your surgery. Because each procedure is unique, it’s difficult to provide an exact cost estimate. After your examination with Dr. Varkony, you will meet with the patient care coordinator to go over pricing, and payment options.
How much time off should I take from work and exercising?
You should plan to take one to two weeks off for work, so swelling and bruising can resolve. Exercise should be avoided for about three weeks after surgery but will be determined by Dr. Steven Varkony through the healing process.
