Neck Lift

A neck lift creates a more youthful appearance in the neck and jawline by removing excess fat and skin, as well as treating vertical neck bands involving a key neck muscle called the platysma.

Neck Lift Facts

Neck lift surgery can improve the appearance of a double chin and excess skin in the neck, creating an overall tighter and more attractive look. An internal corset is usually created by sewing the edges of the platysma muscle together in the midline. The SMAS (a connective tissue covering the neck muscles) is also tightened; this corrects the sagging neck skin and vertical muscle bands associated with aging or a large weight loss.

The issues that a neck lift treats are generally caused by aging. It is also often obtained by people who have previously lost significant amounts of weight and are now dealing with excess sagging skin in the lower facial region.

Neck Lift Surgery Steps

Preparation
Patients can eat normally the day before their surgery, though foods that cause acid reflux and heavy meals should be avoided. However, patients should not eat or drink anything after midnight before the operation.

Patients should also be prepared to take about one week off from work. Strenuous activity should be postponed for at least three weeks.

Neck lift surgery is performed at our outpatient surgical center in Encino.

Anesthesia and Incisions
Neck lifts can be performed under local anesthesia, twilight sedation, or general anesthesia. Regardless, all patients will be made comfortable before and throughout the entirety of the procedure. For maximum safety, Dr. Varkony always works with a board-certified anesthesiologist when general anesthesia is desired.

Once the anesthesia phase is complete, incisions are generally made behind the ears to tighten skin and remove fat. Additional incisions may be made in a wrinkle or crease below the chin so that additional excess skin can be removed and bands in the neck can be treated.

For most patients, a neck lift takes about one or two hours unless additional procedures (such as a face lift) are performed concurrently.

Recovery

The initial recovery phase lasts about one week. Patients experience minimal swelling and bruising, as corticosteroids are administered during and after the surgery.

Final results generally appear several weeks after the procedure is completed. Patients are usually amazed at how much younger and refreshed they look!

Frequently Asked Questions About Facelifts

How long do neck lift results last?

Patients look younger and more refreshed after neck lift surgery. However, we can’t stop the aging process! To tighten and rejuvenate their skin as they age, many patients may wish to undergo revisions after a period of about 10 to 12 years.

Can other procedures be performed along with a neck lift?

Yes, many patients choose to undergo additional surgeries like an eye, brow, or facelift. Opting for multiple procedures will save on overall recovery time in comparison to getting the procedures separately. It also allows patients to meet their personal goals more rapidly.

How much does a neck lift cost?

Every procedure is unique and it’s impossible to know what’s involved before the first consultation, so creating a general cost estimate can be misleading. Patients will be made aware of the likely cost of their procedure(s) after an initial consultation with Dr. Varkony.

The main contributing factor to cost is procedure length. Patients undergoing significant or multiple enhancements are likely to have longer procedures. However, having operations simultaneously may save time and expense in the long run.

Am I a good candidate for neck lift surgery?

To be a good candidate for any surgery, patients need to be in good health. Due to risks associated with smokers having surgical procedures, candidates must be non-smokers or must cut back their smoking before the surgery. They must also stop taking blood-thinning medications before surgery as instructed by their doctor.

Should I see my regular doctor before surgery?

Yes. In addition to obtaining a medical clearance from a family physician, patients will need to have a medical history, a physical exam, basic lab test results, and an EKG (if they are over the age of 45).
