Frequently Asked Questions
Am I an ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery?
The following are some reasons to consider a breast augmentation:
- Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the heaviness of your breasts.
- Breasts that cause overall body disproportion.
- Breasts hang low and have stretched-out skin.
- Regular indentations in your shoulder from tight bra straps.
- Feelings of self-consciousness and embarrassment due to a large breast size.
If you are in good health, have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.
What technique is used during surgery?
Several techniques are available for women undergoing a breast reduction. Dr. Varkony has extensive experience with breast reductions and uses only those techniques that aim to preserve nipple sensation. In the vast majority of cases, the sensation to the nipple can be preserved. Smaller incisions along with lasering of scars post-operatively improve both the shape of the breast and the appearance of any scars.
For those women who require a smaller reduction, minimal incision techniques are available which reduce the breast size with PAL poser-assisted liposuction in combination with removal of the extra skin. This results in faster surgery and less recovery time.
What is the cost of a breast reduction?
The fee for a breast reduction depends on the length of the procedure. During your examination, Dr. Varkony will go over the estimated time and you will meet with his patient care coordinator to go over fees.
Does insurance cover breast reduction?
Health insurance will frequently cover all or part of the cost of surgery.
Where is the procedure performed?
Procedures are done in our fully certified out-patient surgical center.
What type of anesthesia is used?
General anesthesia will be used, which means you will be completely asleep and pain-free during the entire case. During surgery, you will be closely monitored by one of our board-certified MD anesthesiologists.
How long does the procedure take?
A breast reduction can take anywhere between 1 to 3 hours, but longer if additional procedures are added to the surgery.
Is recovery painful?
There may be some pain immediately after surgery, which can be treated with prescribed medications. As with any surgery, patients can expect some down time to allow for the healing process. Exact time tables will be discussed with Dr. Varkony at the consultation and pre-op.
Do I need to see my own doctor before a breast reduction?
All patients require basic lab tests, medical clearance and history & physical from their primary care physician. If the patient is over the age of 45, we require an EKG along with standard testing.
Will I need someone care for me after the procedure?
One should generally have someone with them the first day or so following any surgery.
