Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

If you are in good health, have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.

The following are some of the reasons to consider a breast augmentation;

  • You believe your breasts are too small for your body.
  • You feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit or form-fitting and low-cut tops.
  • Clothes that fit your hips are too large at the bust line.
  • Your breasts have become smaller or less firm after having children.
  • Your breasts have become smaller due to weight loss.
  • One of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other.
Does breast augmentation lift the breasts? Can it replace a breast lift?

No. If the breast is droopy and the nipple position is low, a breast lift is typically desired. Augmentation may indeed give breasts a small lift but if you have significant amounts of tissue sagging, you will probably want a breast lift at the same time – a very frequent combination of procedures. Otherwise, you are going to end up with mostly larger versions of the breasts you already have.

How will I determine what size breast implant is right for me?

It starts with an open discussion between you and Dr. Varkony.  Most women have a pretty good idea of the shape and size they’re hoping for. Patients will often tell us, “a full C cup – something that is proportional for me.” Some others will either want to go with a more conservative approach or for an extremely voluptuous look. Dr. Varkony will explain what he believes is possible in your case. At that point, the two of you will agree on what size and type of implant is best for you.

How do you make sure you’re choosing the right implant?

We start by matching the width of the implant to the width of the patient. A petite lady with a narrower breast width needs a smaller diameter implant than a broad-shouldered lady who has a wider breast width. Using this measurement-based approach helps us get the desired cleavage without excessive space between the breasts. It also helps avoid unwanted excess fullness at the side of the breast, aka “side boob.”

Once the width of the implant has been determined, then we can talk about the implant shape, or what doctors call a profile. Higher profile implants are narrower and better for petite women, while moderate profile or moderate-plus profile works well for most others. Often the selection is mostly a matter of the patient’s personal preference and taste. There may be several implants that could potentially look good for a particular patient. Patients often use sizers (implant samples) to try to get an idea of how their procedure might turn out.

Where are incisions usually located?

Dr. Varkony’s preferred incision site is typically inside the armpit to avoid any scars on the breasts. The incision is placed in a natural crease to ensure that it will be as inconspicuous as possible. After healing is complete, it is often hard to see the scar.

How will my implants be placed?

The selected implant is carefully inserted either above or below the pectoral muscles, in a precisely-tailored tissue pocket. During your examination, Dr. Varkony will go over your options and help you choose the best implant placement for your desired results.

What type of breast implants are available?

We offer both saline and silicone implants to our patients. Before choosing one over the other, it is good to know the benefits of both so that you can make your decision based on your personal priorities.

Silicone breast implants are filled with a thick gel with a strong consistency similar to mammary tissue. They tend to cost more than other types of implants but are the most frequent choice because they tend to be softer; most women feel they are more natural in feeling and appearance. There has been some controversy in the past over whether silicone implants are safe. However, the FDA has tested and approved their safety for use in breast augmentation surgeries for women 22 years of age and over. Also, as a silicone implant is made of cohesive, solid gel, no harmful fluids or substances will enter the woman’s body if the implant is damaged.

As the name implies, saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution. Unlike silicone gel implants, only the silicone casing of the implants is initially placed inside the breast by the surgeon. Once it is in place, the casing is filled with the saline solution. Some patients may prefer this type of implant because the method used allows for a smaller incision and therefore a smaller scar. Also, as mentioned above, they are less costly than silicone implants.

Can additional procedures be performed at the same time as a breast augmentation?

Yes, many patients choose to combine a breast lift with their augmentation to get their desired results. Additionally, this can be done in combination with more procedures. (Breast augmentations and breast lifts are often included in mommy makeovers.)

How long does a breast augmentation take?

Breast augmentation surgery is a 30-minute process but, if additional procedures are added, it will naturally take longer.

What type of anesthesia is used?

General anesthesia will be employed so patients will be completely unconscious during surgery. Patients are closely monitored at all times by one of our board-certified anesthesiologists.

Where is the procedure performed?

Dr. Varkony performs surgery in our outpatient, fully certified, hospital-grade operating room.

What is the cost of breast augmentation?

The fee for breast augmentation depends on the type of implant you choose among other factors. During your examination, Dr. Varkony will go over your options and help you make the correct choices for your desired results.

How is breast augmentation surgery performed?

Breast augmentation is performed by Dr. Varkony. The anesthesia is provided by one of our board-certified anesthesiologists, for optimal safety. The selected implant is carefully inserted either above or below the pectoral muscles, in a precisely-tailored tissue pocket. The incision is typically placed in the armpit to avoid any scars on the breasts.

Surgery typically takes 30 minutes with another hour or so for recovery from anesthesia.  A responsible adult – often a friend or relative – then takes the patient home.  Most patients are pleasantly surprised to find that the recovery from breast augmentation is much easier than they expected.  With our enhanced recovery protocol, most patients require very few prescription pain meds. Patients usually return to work in three days. If you have a surgery on a Friday, you can usually be back at work on Monday.

What is the recovery process like?

Your breasts will appear firmer and fuller immediately following your breast augmentation. As with any plastic surgery, some swelling and bruising can be anticipated. Your breasts may not attain their final feel or shape for up to a year.

You may be uncomfortable when you first wake up after your breast augmentation. Dr. Varkony will provide medication to relieve any discomfort. You will receive specific instructions to follow during your recovery, including such matters as rest and sleeping positions, raising your arms, bathing and showering techniques, and breast exercises.

Dr. Varkony will want to examine you at regular intervals during the first year following your breast augmentation. Our patients return to the center following the third day of recovery so that Dr. Varkony can remove any bandages and check the incision area. Breasts may be swollen and bruised for approximately one to two weeks.

In most patients, the scars from the breast augmentation incisions will be pink for about six months and will gradually fade after that. The scars are usually inconspicuous. Nevertheless, you should know that all scars are permanent and their height, width, and final color, while usually quite good, depend on several factors including genetics, age, and how you heal.

If you sunbathe or utilize a tanning bed, you must not do so until any numbness of the breast is gone (to avoid burning). After this point, you must protect the incision site with a sunscreen of SPF 50 or more for at least the first two years to prevent reddening of the scar.

Do I need to see my family doctor before breast augmentation?

Yes. All patients require basic lab tests and medical clearance, including a medical history as well as a physical from their primary care physician. If the patient is over the age of 45, we require an EKG along with standard testing.

What are the potential risks of breast augmentation?

The body generally tolerates breast implants without any problems. One part of the process is for the body to react to the presence of a foreign object by encircling it with a membrane doctors refer to as a capsule. The capsule is a normal part of the process. Sometimes, however, the capsule can become smaller and tighten around implants, squeezing it and making it round and firm. This is called capsular contracture and occurs in different women to varying degrees. In most women, however, this is not a problem. Although some women may not mind some extra firmness or roundness, if the capsule is too tight it can cause the breast to become unnaturally firm, misshapen, or uncomfortable. Capsular contracture can occur a few weeks to several years after a procedure. There is no way to predict your body’s reaction after breast augmentation, and no test to determine if you will develop capsular contracture. If a patient does develop capsular contracture, surgical intervention may be required.

Will I need someone to care for me after the procedure?

One should generally have someone with them the first day following any surgery. Also, as mentioned, a responsible adult will be required to take you home following the procedure.
