LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction in Encino

For liposuction in Encino, consider the expertise and decades of experience that board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven J. Varkony brings to the operating room.

Why Liposuction?

Because dieting results in a decrease in overall body fat, some areas of fat are more resistant to dieting; you would have to lose a tremendous amount of weight to get rid of some fatty deposits and this would make you too thin overall. Liposuction removes pockets of fat that resist the effects of a proper diet and regular exercise to create a more contoured and proportional appearance.

What Occurs During Liposuction?

While there are differing liposuction methods, all involve removing fat by suctioning. One or more small incisions are made so that fat can be removed via a cannula (a metal tube) attached to a suction machine.

Three Liposuction Techniques

Patients who undergo liposuction typically report an improved contour with generally enhanced muscle definition. However, today’s medical technology offers the potential for more dramatic results. Liposuction methods break down as follows:

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction uses a solution that includes saline (saltwater) to make the fat easier to remove, as well as a topical anesthetic and epinephrine, a drug that shrinks blood vessels to minimize blood loss. The plastic surgeon then employs a cannula attached to a special surgical vacuum to remove the targeted fat. This is essentially the base option for liposuction today.

Smart Liposuction

Smart Liposuction™ adds to traditional liposuction by using a high-powered laser to liquify fat deposits with enhanced precision. A smaller cannula is used, therefore incisions are typically smaller as well.

One of the most attractive features of Smart Liposuction™ is that the laser can promote collagen growth in the skin, which can create a beneficial tightening effect.

VASER Liposculpting

VASER® is an acronym for vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance. VASER liposculpting is another step in the evolution of liposuction. The next-generation technique employs ultrasound to precisely and efficiently break down the chemical bonds between fat cells. Studies back up the claim that VASER liposuction allows for superior results over tumescent liposuction in certain areas. The procedure is sometimes referred to as Hi-Def to emphasize its ability to powerfully highlight muscle groups such as abdominals.

VASER Liposculpting and Smart Liposuction Benefits

VASER liposculpting and Smart Liposuction both build on the tumescent liposuction technique by offering more powerful fat liquification. By breaking apart fat bonds before the suction phase begins, more fat can be extracted for greater impact.

The obvious difference between the two techniques is that one uses highly concentrated light and the other uses ultrasonic frequencies. VASER liposculpting uses extremely powerful but inaudible ultrasound waves to essentially vibrate fat cells into falling apart. Smart Liposuction’s laser generates highly focused and discrete heat waves to disintegrate the bonds between fat cells.

The enhanced precision of both liposuction options provides Dr. Varkony the ability to target fat deposits in hard-to-reach or more delicate areas — such as between muscle groups.  These techniques are capable of uncovering a “six-pack” if the muscle tissue is present in the abdomen but has been hidden by lingering fat. These techniques can also create more precisely sculpted, and therefore more flattering, curves around the waist, hips, and buttocks

VASER vs. Smart Liposuction

While both of these techniques produce outstanding outcomes, there are technical differences that may make one or the other the better choice in certain situations. Frequently asked questions about Liposuction

Which areas can be treated by liposuction?

Most areas of the body can be treated with liposuction, provided there is enough fat and other tissue to support the procedure. Commonly, liposuction tends to focus on the abdominal region, hips, thighs, knees, “love handles” (posterior waist), buttocks, arms, neck, and elsewhere.

Where is liposuction surgery performed?

Liposuction procedures are done in our fully certified out-patient surgical center. We always use board-certified anesthesiologists and certified registered nurses.

How long does a liposuction procedure take?

It typically lasts between one and three hours, depending on the plan agreed upon by the patient and Dr. Varkony.

How invasive is liposuction?

Liposuction is considered minimally invasive. Most liposuction procedures only require an incision for the liquid infiltrating device and cannula, and downtime is restricted to a few days. For comparison, a tummy tuck procedure requires a longer incision and the recovery period is notably longer.

What can I expect immediately following liposuction?

Patients are typically able to return home or to their hotel room the day of the procedure. In some situations, however, patients may want to stay the evening under supervision in a post-operative facility. Of course, you will need to be driven back to your home or hotel room by someone, usually a friend or relative.

What level of post-operative pain can I expect?

The discomfort level is typically mild, can be effectively dealt with medication, and should lessen fairly rapidly. Moreover, the advanced liposuction techniques discussed above should help to reduce the intensity and duration of any post-operative discomfort

Will I need someone to look after me following liposuction?

Yes. It is important to have someone with you during the first 24 hours following your procedure. This ensures that, in the rare event of a complication, medical attention can be delivered promptly. In most cases, a friend or relative is sufficient but, if desired, we can refer you to a nurse who can stay with you overnight.

How long will it be before I can resume my old routine?

Most people with sedentary jobs can get back to their normal working life within a few days. However, patients should avoid any strenuous activity for at least one to two weeks.

What kind of anesthesia will be used during liposuction?

General anesthesia is used during most liposuction procedures, which means patients will be unconscious and free of pain. In some shorter procedures, other types of sedation with local anesthesia may be used instead. Regardless, patients will always be kept comfortable and free of pain during and immediately after the procedure.

Will liposuction remove cellulite?

While liposuction can occasionally reduce the appearance of cellulite in some patients, it is primarily a skin condition and not a type of body fat. Therefore, patients should not expect any significant reduction of cellulite following liposuction.

Can the excised fat return?

The fat cells that are removed do not return, as the body stops manufacturing new fat cells in adulthood. On the other hand, consuming more calories than you burn will cause the body to store the excess calories as fat, just as before. Therefore, patients who overeat will experience weight gain, but differently than before. This includes the possibility for the disproportional distribution of fat if you gain a lot of weight. Patients who obtain liposuction need to continue their prior diet and exercise regimen.

Will liposuction tighten excess skin?

While Smart Lipo will shrink the skin somewhat, liposuction is purely intended to remove fat and improve the body’s overall shape. Loose skin can be addressed through tummy tucks and various body lifts. In some cases, it may be best to get another procedure and, in other cases, combining them may be a viable strategy.

Can liposuction cause loose skin?

If the skin’s elasticity is good, it should not be a problem. Although liposuction can remove up to 12 pounds of fat, it usually removes only three to four pounds of fat in many people, so many patients notice no difference in skin looseness. If elasticity is problematic, however, Dr. Varkony may suggest combining or replacing the treatment with a lift or tummy tuck.

What is the difference between abdominal liposuction and a tummy tuck?

Abdominal liposuction is only intended to remove excess fat from the abdominal area, and that is typically sufficient if the muscles and skin have overall good tone. When skin tone and muscles are problematic, tummy tuck surgery removes excess skin and tightens muscle tissue at the site. Oftentimes, however, liposuction is involved in some capacity.

What is the cost of liposuction?

Liposuction costs vary significantly based on the type of liposuction and the number of areas that are being treated. Procedure length as well as facility and anesthesia-related fees will all affect the total cost of a procedure. It’s therefore not possible to provide an accurate figure online. A consultation with Dr. Varkony and our staff can provide an accurate cost estimate for liposuction.
