Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a good candidate for the Breast Lift with Augmentation procedure?
The best breast lift with augmentation patient is in good health, a non-smoker, and is able to avoid blood thinning medications for two weeks before surgery. She is unhappy with the sagging, droopy breasts, and would like additional fullness.
What is a Breast Lift?
What is a Breast Augmentation?
How long does the procedure take?
The breast lift with augmentation procedure can take anywhere between 2 and 4 hours, but longer if additional procedures are added to the surgery.
Will I need someone to care for me after surgery?
Yes. It is important to have a family member, friend, or medical professional with you for the first couple days following surgery.
Where does the procedure take place?
Procedures are done in our fully certified out- patient surgical center, along with board-certified anesthesiologists, and certified registered nurses.
What type of anesthesia will be used?
General anesthesia will be used, which means you will be completely asleep and pain-free during the entire case. During surgery you will be closely monitored by one of our board-certified MD anesthesiologists.
What do I need to do the day before surgery?
The day before a breast lift with augmentation, you should eat normally but avoid excessively heavy meals, or foods that can lead to acid reflux. Prepare your affairs so that you completely relax and rest after surgery. Most importantly, do not eat or drink anything after midnight before your procedure.
Do I need to see my own doctor prior to the surgery?
All patients require basic lab tests, medical clearance and history & physical from their primary care physician. If the patient is over the age of 45 we require an EKG along with the standard testing.
Where will the incision be located?
There are 3 main patterns of breast lift, depending on how much droop there is to correct. The one with the shortest scar is known as the “donut” lift, also called the circumsolar lift. This design works for women who just need a minor degree of lift or who wish to have the areolar size reduced, if it is overly large. In this operation, there is no scar down the front of the breast, or in the crease. This lift is commonly combined with a breast augmentation, for women that would like a small degree of elevation of the nipple-areola at the time of their augmentation. Since it has the smallest incision, it is also the mildest of the lifting operations.
For intermediate cases, a “vertical mastopexy” is performed. This permits a greater degree of elevation and tightening of the breast than the donut lift. In this situation, the incision still goes around the nipple-areolar complex, but now extends down the front of the breast. There is no horizontal incision in the crease.
For cases where there is a lot of stretched-out breast skin, and high degrees of breast ptosis (droop), the traditional “inverted-T” mastopexy is used. This design includes the horizontal incision in the crease as well.
Can additional procedures be performed at the same time?
Yes, this can be done in combination with multiple procedures, which is sometimes referred to as a mommy makeover.
How long does a Breast Lift with Augmentation last?
Unfortunately, time and gravity march on for all of us. Women who have stretchy tissue that allowed breast droop to develop in the first place will tend to have some recurrence of this over time. However, their breast shape is always better than if they had never had the operation, and better than their overlooked friends. Most women will have a significant improvement for between 10 to 12 years. A second surgery can be performed, if needed.
What is the cost of a Breast Lift with Augmentation?
The fee for a breast lift with augmentation depends on the length of the procedure, and the implant style you choose to go with. During your examination, Dr. Varkony will go over the estimated time and implant options, and you will meet with his patient care coordinator to go over fees.
What is the recovery process like?
Your breasts will appear firmer and fuller immediately following your breast lift with augmentation. As with any cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, some swelling and bruising can be anticipated. Your breasts may not attain their final feel or shape for three to four months. Be sure to address any questions or concerns with Dr. Varkony immediately. Your health and happiness are the most important considerations at any time.
You may be uncomfortable when you “awaken” after your breastlift with augmentation. Dr. Varkony will provide medication to relieve any discomfort. You will receive specific instructions to follow during your recovery including rest and sleeping positions, raising your arms, bathing and showering techniques.
Dr. Varkony will want to examine you at regular intervals during the first 90 days following your breast augmentation. Our patients return to see Dr. Varkony sometime after the third day so that a Dr. Varkony can remove any bandages and check the incision area. Your breasts may be swollen and bruised for approximately one to two weeks.
In most patients, the scars from the breast lift with augmentation incisions will be pink for about six months and gradually fade after that.
As with any surgical procedure, small nerves to the skin are interrupted during surgery. Portions of the nipple area may feel numb or have less than a full feeling. Sensitivity usually returns over several weeks, but some diminished feeling may last indefinitely after your breast augmentation.
If you sunbathe or utilize a tanning bed, you must not do so until any numbness of the breast is gone (to avoid burning). After this point, you must protect the incision site with a sunscreen of SPF 50 or more for at least six months.
